Medellín Airport (MDE) to the City in 2026: Taxi Fares, Airport Bus and Private Transfers

October 13, 2026

You have just landed at José María Córdova International Airport (MDE), cleared immigration, picked up your bag and walked out into the cool mountain air. Now comes the question every traveler to Medellín asks: what is the best way to get from the airport to the city, and how much should it cost?

The answer is not as obvious as it seems. MDE is not in Medellín at all. It sits in Rionegro, on a high plateau east of the city, roughly 35 km and a mountain range away. Depending on the option you choose, the trip can cost you anywhere from about 20,000 to more than 140,000 Colombian pesos and take from 30 minutes to almost two hours door to door.

In this guide we break down every option with real 2026 prices: the official fixed taxi fare, the 24-hour airport bus, ride-hailing apps and pre-booked private transfers such as taxienmedellin.com, a local 24/7 taxi service covering Medellín and Bello. We also cover travel times to each neighborhood, how to get back to the airport for an early flight, and the scams to avoid. If you are still planning the bigger trip, start with our Master Colombia Travel Guide.

Ride-hailing appsVaries with demand30–60 minTravelers used to apps who accept the gray area

Short version: if you are two or more people, a taxi costs about the same as several bus tickets plus a city taxi, and it drops you at your door. If you are alone with a backpack and want to save money, the airport bus is a solid choice. If you land after dark or with children, book your ride before you fly.

Understanding Medellín’s two airports

Medellín actually has two airports, and it matters which one is on your ticket:

  • José María Córdova International Airport (MDE) in Rionegro handles all international flights and most domestic routes. This is almost certainly where you will land. It is about 35 km from the city center.
  • Enrique Olaya Herrera Airport (EOH) sits right inside the city, next to the Guayabal and Belén neighborhoods. It only handles small regional flights to destinations within Colombia. If you land here, a normal metered city taxi will take you to El Poblado or Laureles in 10 to 20 minutes.

Everything below refers to MDE, the main airport.

The official airport taxi: fixed fare for 2026

Since February 2, 2026, taxis in the Aburrá Valley operate under new rates, and the airport run has a fixed fare. It is not charged by the meter. The price applies in both directions and is per vehicle, not per passenger:

Taxi typeFixed fare MDE – Medellín (2026)What you get
Basic taxi (yellow)132,000 COPStandard sedan, up to 4 passengers with normal luggage
Electric taxi134,100 COPQuiet, newer electric vehicle
Luxury taxi143,100 COPLarger, more comfortable vehicle

The neighboring municipality of Bello adopted the same 132,000 COP airport fare starting August 15, 2026, so the price is the same whether you are going to El Poblado, Laureles or the north of the valley.

Where to find taxis at the airport

When you exit the arrivals hall, follow the signs to the official taxi rank. There is an organized line of white airport taxis with dispatchers. It is safe and regulated, but during high season (December, Easter week, June–July and the Feria de las Flores in August) the line can be long, especially when several international flights land at once.

Tolls and routes: Túnel de Oriente vs. Las Palmas

There are two main roads between the airport and Medellín:

  • Túnel de Oriente: the fastest route. The tunnel opened in 2019 and cut the trip dramatically. It enters the city near San Diego, close to the center and El Poblado. Without traffic, the drive takes about 20 to 30 minutes from the tunnel exit. The toll for cars is 26,300 COP since January 2026.
  • Vía Las Palmas: the old mountain road with more curves and heavy traffic at rush hour. It reaches the upper part of El Poblado directly but can take 40 to 60 minutes.

Always ask before you leave whether the toll is included in the price. With most pre-booked services it is, but confirming avoids an awkward conversation at the end of the ride.

The airport bus: the budget option

The cheapest way into the city is the airport bus run by Combuses. Since January 1, 2026, the ticket costs 20,000 COP per person. Buses leave from the front of the terminal and run 24 hours a day, with departures every few minutes at busy times.

The bus ends at its station in San Diego, near the center of Medellín. You can pay in cash, with the Cívica transit card, by QR code or with a debit or credit card. The ride takes around 45 to 60 minutes depending on traffic.

The catch: San Diego is not where most travelers stay. From there you still need a city taxi to your hotel, usually 10,000 to 20,000 COP more to El Poblado or Laureles. With two people, the total is already close to half of a direct taxi. With three or four people, the direct taxi wins on both price and convenience.

Who should take the bus

  • Solo travelers on a tight budget.
  • People with a single backpack or carry-on.
  • Daytime arrivals, when getting a taxi in San Diego is easy.

If you arrive late at night, the extra cost of a direct taxi is worth it: you avoid changing vehicles in the city center after dark.

Ride-hailing apps at Medellín airport

Apps such as Uber, DiDi and InDrive are widely used in Medellín, but they operate in a legal gray area in Colombia because private cars are not licensed to carry paying passengers. In practice this means:

  • Drivers may ask you to sit in the front seat so the car looks like a private ride.
  • Pickups directly at the terminal can be awkward, and some drivers ask you to walk to a nearby spot.
  • Prices change with demand and can be higher than the fixed taxi fare at peak times.

Many travelers use them without problems, but for the airport, where the taxi price is fixed and regulated, a licensed taxi or a pre-booked service is usually simpler.

Pre-booked taxi or private transfer: the stress-free option

For most visitors the smartest move is to book the ride before landing. A driver waits for you at the exit with your name, you already know the price, and you do not have to negotiate or queue after a long flight. It is particularly worth it if:

  • You land between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
  • You travel with children, older relatives or a lot of luggage.
  • You are a group of three or four people.
  • You do not speak Spanish and want everything arranged in advance.
  • Your hotel is in an area that is hard to find, such as upper El Poblado, Las Palmas or Envigado’s hills.

Local services like taxienmedellin.com let you message the driver directly on WhatsApp, choose between a yellow taxi and a grey taxi, and agree on the price before you fly. Their Spanish guide to the airport taxi fare in 2026 has the full official rate table.

Travel times from MDE to each neighborhood

These are typical door-to-door times by car via the Túnel de Oriente, outside rush hour. Add 20 to 40 minutes between 6 and 9 a.m. and between 5 and 8 p.m., or when it rains heavily.

DestinationApprox. time by taxiNotes
El Poblado (Provenza, Parque Lleras)35–50 minLas Palmas can be faster to the upper part of El Poblado
Laureles / Estadio40–55 minCrosses the city west of the river
Downtown (La Candelaria)30–45 minClosest to the tunnel exit
Envigado40–55 minSouth of El Poblado
Bello50–70 minNorth of the valley; same 132,000 COP fixed fare
GuatapéAbout 1 hourCloser to the airport than to Medellín

A useful tip: Guatapé and the Piedra del Peñol are closer to the airport than to Medellín itself. If you have an afternoon flight on your last day, you can visit Guatapé in the morning and go straight to MDE with a private driver.

Step by step: arriving at MDE

1. Immigration and Check-Mig

Colombia requires the online Check-Mig form before you arrive. Fill it in within the allowed window before your flight and keep the confirmation on your phone. Our Colombia entry requirements guide walks you through it step by step.

2. Get some pesos

There are ATMs in the arrivals area. Withdraw a moderate amount of Colombian pesos for the taxi, tips and small purchases. Avoid airport exchange counters if you can: rates are usually worse than an ATM withdrawal in the city.

3. Get connected

Having data the moment you land makes everything easier, from messaging your driver to checking the route. An eSIM installed before your flight is the simplest option; see our guide to the best eSIM for South America.

4. Meet your driver or join the taxi line

If you pre-booked, your driver will be at the exit of the arrivals hall. If not, follow the signs to the official taxi rank and confirm the fixed fare before you get in. Ignore people who approach you inside the terminal offering rides.

5. Enjoy the view

The descent from the plateau into the Aburrá Valley, especially at night when the city lights fill the valley, is one of the most beautiful welcomes in South America.

Going back to the airport

The return trip is where many travelers get stressed. A few rules of thumb:

  • Leave 3 hours before an international flight and 2 hours before a domestic one. The drive is usually under an hour, but traffic, rain and check-in lines are unpredictable.
  • Book the day before if your flight leaves early. The metro is closed at night and finding a taxi on the street at 3 a.m. is harder.
  • Remember the taxi restrictions: in the second half of 2026, taxis have pico y placa (license-plate driving restrictions) Monday to Friday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., so a share of the fleet is off the road every weekday. Booking ahead avoids that problem.
  • Keep small bills: drivers do not always have change for 50,000 or 100,000 COP notes.

How to avoid scams and overpaying

Medellín’s taxi drivers are overwhelmingly honest, but airports everywhere attract a few opportunists. Here is how to protect yourself:

  1. Know the fixed fare. In 2026 it is 132,000 COP for a basic taxi. If someone quotes much more, politely decline.
  2. Use only official taxis or a pre-booked driver. Licensed taxis have white public-service plates, the company number painted on the doors and the driver ID visible on the dashboard.
  3. Agree on tolls and the final price before leaving.
  4. Follow the route on Google Maps.
  5. Pay with smaller notes and say aloud which note you hand over, to avoid the classic switched-bill trick.
  6. Keep your phone away from open windows at traffic lights in the city.

Taxi or bus? The real cost per person

The fixed taxi fare looks expensive next to a 20,000 COP bus ticket, but the comparison changes quickly once you count people and the second taxi you need from San Diego. Here is the math for a trip to El Poblado, assuming a 15,000 COP city taxi from the bus station:

Group sizeBus + city taxi (total)Direct taxi (total)Difference
1 travelerAbout 35,000 COP132,000 COPBus saves about 97,000 COP
2 travelersAbout 55,000 COP132,000 COPBus saves about 77,000 COP
3 travelersAbout 75,000 COP132,000 COPBus saves about 57,000 COP, but takes longer
4 travelersAbout 95,000 COP132,000 COPTaxi costs about 9,000 COP more per person and saves up to an hour

Money is only part of the equation. The bus means two vehicles, carrying luggage through the San Diego station and a longer trip overall. For a family of four arriving after a long-haul flight, paying a little more per person for a direct ride to the hotel door is usually the better deal. For a solo backpacker arriving at noon, the bus is the clear winner.

Traveling with children, seniors or lots of luggage

A standard taxi fits four passengers and two large suitcases plus carry-ons. If you travel with more luggage, a stroller or surfboards, ask for a larger vehicle when you book. Grey taxis and luxury taxis are usually roomier than the classic yellow sedan, and a pre-booked service can tell you in advance whether everything will fit. Colombian taxis rarely carry child seats, so if you need one, ask when booking or bring a lightweight travel seat.

Your first days in Medellín

Once you are settled, the city is easy to explore. The metro, metrocable cable cars and tram connect most of the places you will want to see, from the Botero sculptures downtown to the famous Comuna 13 graffiti tour. At night, or when you are carrying anything heavy, taxis are cheap by international standards: the minimum city fare in 2026 is 8,300 COP.
